TALK OF THE TOWN

Video of a two-year-old smoker goes viral

In a rare instance, a two-year-old boy in Indonesia smokes two packs of cigarettes a day, Mail Online reported. Rapi Ananda Pamungkas, a resident of Sukabum city, started smoking by picking up used butts scattered outside his mother’s market stall that older boys would light for him. But within days he was hooked and would constantly pester passing shoppers to give him cigarettes. They initially found the youngster’s demands endearing and plied him with cigarettes and would laugh as he lit up. Rapi’s mother, Maryati, 35, admitted that she buys two packs of cigarettes a day for the boy to stop him from going crazy. The toddler soon started becoming aggressive and throwing tantrums when he couldn’t get his beloved favourite brand of cigarettes.

“My child is used to smoking while drinking coffee and eating cake,” she said and added, “He has been smoking every day for around two months. If I don’t give him a cigarette, my child goes berserk”. The mother further revealed her kid could smoke about 40 cigarettes every day. Rapi’s father, Misbahudin, 40, who also smokes, says he doesn’t know why his child became so addicted. The parents said they will take the toddler to see a doctor to try and kick his smoking habit.

Mahira Khan & Bilal Ashraf to share screen space

Producer Momina Duraid has revealed that her next feature film titled Superstar will star Mahira Khan and Bilal Ashraf. The film will be helmed by Ehtishamuddin (Udaari fame). Just before the film’s pre-production underwent major transition, Superstar was supposed to be directed by Zeba Bakhtiar and Adnan Sami Khan’s son, Azaan Sami Khan. The latter, however, still remains the screenwriter of the film. What remained constant though was the team’s decision of casting Mahira as the film’s protagonist. “Mahira is like my baby sister, she’s family to me. I’ve worked with her for so many years that I know her true potential. She’s one of the finest actors we have if given a role to shine in,” Momina said, adding, “Since it’s also a love story, the leads look good together in my head. When I imagine Bilal and Mahira together, I feel they will make a stunning on-screen couple.” The music of the film is being composed by Azaan and Atif Aslam has already recorded two songs for the soundtrack. The film will go on floors by the end of this year.

I'm like the Salman Khan of Pakistan: Fahad Mustafa

In an interview with BBC Asian Network, Fahad spoke of his career in the industry as a TV actor first and then a game show host, eventually making it to the big screen, and shared that he has been very lucky. The Load Wedding star added that he doesn’t feel threatened on having two of his films releasing at the same time. “Since the past four years, producers have been releasing their films on Eid because it’s the time of the year when the masses of the country come to the cinema. I have often had films releasing on Eid as well and I don’t know if I should say this, but I feel like the Salman Khan of Pakistan,” joked Fahad.

While he has earned his fair share of love from the audience, many still perceive him to be arrogant because of his tongue-in-cheek attitude. Clearing the air, the Actor in Law star said, “People don’t realise that I’m also a human being. I crack jokes like anyone else, which some people find arrogant while others might find funny. So I don’t really care about what they think of me.”

Under 18 models no longer acceptable

Back in February this year, one of the world’s biggest fashion magazines Vogue announced that it would no longer be hiring models under the age of 18. Now, a few months down the line, the publication has explained its decision in a new editorial. “Early this year, in the wake of #MeToo revelations, Condé Nast, the publisher of this and many other magazines, issued a new global vendor code of conduct,” the article reads.

“Responding to stories about models both, male and female being inappropriately touched, pressured for sexual favours, and even assaulted, Condé Nast established provisions aimed to ensure that all its editorial shoots are safe working spaces – harassment-free zones with private dressing rooms and allowances for model approval of both, poses and clothing,” the editorial explained.
