Tinak Dhin

An Adrenaline-pumping Treat

Tinak Dhin

The ripple-casters of the ditty joint have done it, at last, this season! A champion number brought out on the golden wings of folk and pop, Tinak Dhin ascended to the top of the billboard like the jacket zipper. We were waiting for a true punch-packer with bated breath since the beginning of the season. And the stylish Ali Hamza with a truly ‘smoky’ pitch has delivered it with personal dedication. The two other gentlemen with their own arresting nuances are Ali Sethi and Waqar Ehsin, who have added fizz to the beverage. The whole team showed that gloss is not the boss; true talent is. The best thing about Tinak Dhin is the tempo born out of the sur sangam; because the tempo that gets delivered through just the beat doesn’t survive decades. But, this one tackles tempo with a classical wand. The great thing about the song is that it keeps the lyrics simple to shore it up to the awami scale, as well as add the exhilarating sargamein for the older crowd. As I said, Ali Hamza has the rasping decibel, Ali Sethi contributes the ageless drink, and last but not the least, Waqar Ehsin is the surprise packet, with his solid tenor. Gulp it down!

Mahira Khan versus Meera

Mahira Khan versus Meera

Zero-Sum Game

Look, it’s just a coincidence that these ladies featured in our column, last week. But, you can’t hide the fact that they mean show business. And sooner or later, they had to cross paths. What caused them to lock horns, you ask? Pure and simple, age factor! Well, Meera probably thought her wider swathe of senior jargon would not draw honest-to-goodness fire from the soft-spoken Mahira Khan. Unfortunately, for her, that week may be got her temper higher than usual. After all, with the sort of ringside seat that Meera seems to enjoy on the TV shows, she has turned into a stateswoman of sorts. With the question marks making a beeline for her, after the failure of her own movie, Hotal, and the bombardment of news from across the border about the success of the local TV girls there, she just had to twirl her pencil-like hairpin to send the exclamations off into the far pavilions. What surprised everybody though, was the forceful utterance from the coy, lovely lady of Ho Mann Jahan. “Buzurg actresses ab aaram karein!” she is said to have opined, as reported by a film weekly. Calm down, lady. Woh already aaram kar rahee hain! I mean, you got uptight for nothing. It’s less of cinema for the senior ones; more in line with the extra-curricular stuff. Meera’s next venture seems miles away. “This is the age of the younger lot,” Mahira is quoted to have said. “I haven’t come up through any short cut or sifarish.” Well, if Meera was in conversation with Mahira at this time, she might have retorted with “I also did not become a film actress through a short cut. I had an offer from a director to act with Shah Rukh, but I refused because of the wrong sum!” Sum thing else, altogether!

My Pure Land

My Pure Land

Story of Defiance!

They came in droves, their smuggled guns glinting in the sun! Their vehicles were making their way through the green fields of an innocuous little village in Nawabshah, for a routine harassment of some residents to vacate the property. But, the hoodlums had made one vital error, this time. They had contended without the gritty offensive of the valiant tigress of Qazi Ahmed Taluka in District Benazirabad. Sarmad Masud’s startling episode, My Pure Land got a great welcome in the Edinburgh International Film Festival, recently. The film has been previewed in The Guardian and Independent. Based on a series of real incidents, the film portrays the armed struggle of one woman, Nazo Dharejo, her mother and one of her sisters, against family land mafia in a remote village of Nawabshah. Dusky Suhaee Abro plays the tough woman, who has become a legend in Sindh for fighting the PPP MPA Jam Tamachi Unar, who blocked the waters in the last flood to save his property, while the waters flooded the small villages of Nawabshah. She broke the blockage and saved her village. Nazo has recently joined PML-N, and that’s why this film could mean a great plus for the party in the next election. The film was scheduled to be released on 15 September in theatres in the UK.

Saba Qamar & Noor Bukhari

Saba Qamar & Noor Bukhari

Taxable Income is Trouble!

Girls interrupted, one could safely say! Wallowing in their great exploits on screen, suddenly two genuinely talented artistes, Saba Qamar and Noor Bukhari have been stopped forcefully in their tracks by the FBR sleuths at the signals. In fact, according to the papers, the tax boys are so jazbati this time that they have barged into the homes of these girls and have locked them in with their taxable income! They have sealed their houses, if the pen-pushers are to be believed. But, Saba Qamar says her house hasn’t been sealed, and she is sitting in her room mazey se! She further says that she exactly knows who is creating this mess for her, as he had done it earlier, too. According to the tax hounds, the resourceful head-turners didn’t respond once to the notices sent to them. They say Saba owes them Rs. 34 lakh, while Noor is holding back Rs. 15 lakh. Coming down to brass tax, Noor is already troubled enough with that separation case in the docks against husband Wali. As for Saba, she is a Baghi!

Sajal Aly

Sajal Aly

Innocent Charm

Elements of her act really click with the audiences! The cute little pixie of the local drama scene is making surfing waves now. Now, more than ever, in the latest hit, O Rangreza, she is throwing tantrums that even zonked out seniors like Naumaan Ijaz and Irsa Ghazal. Her girlish, innocent looks, and tons of talent launched her into the Bollywood orbit with Mom alongside Adnan Siddiqui and Sri Devi. In O Rangreza, Sajal plays a spoilt, but in-your-face critic of all members of the family. A few weeks back, she even stunned her handsome papa, Naumaan Ijaz, as she turned her young logic into a drill to make holes into old-school hypocrisy. In another serial, Yaqeen Ka Safar, the same week, she used her pixie charm to cure chronic patients as a young lady doctor. That makes for some riveting drama down mountainous north, where crackling thunder and huge rain is in abundance these days. Whoosh! What a storm she has created in a short while.
