Google Translate with additional new languages

Tech NEWS

The Google Translate app will be capable of visually translating 13 new languages by using the camera on your smartphone. In 2015, Google added the visual translation feature to its Translate app with the support of 27 different languages. It allows users to translate dinner menus and signs in real time, making communicating abroad much easier. Now it has added Punjabi, Bengali, Vietnamese, Thai, Gujarati, Kannada, Nepali, Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam, putting the total number of supported languages close to 50. Users can access the feature in the Translate app by navigating to the camera icon on the home screen. The app will then prompt you to line up the text you’re attempting to translate and take a photo, the app will scan the text with the use of a machine learning technique known as Neural Machine Translation (NMT), which will then provide a translation into the language of your choice. The new additions will be available on both the iOS and Android versions of the app.

Microsoft tackles Bing search results

Microsoft has taken action to change its Bing search engine after it was found to give ‘horrifying’ results for some terminologies. A journalist, Chris Hoffman, discovered Bing suggested racist topics when he looked up words to different races. Bing also ranked widely debunked conspiracy theories among the top suggestions for other words. He also suggested that Microsoft had to do better at moderating its search system. Racist memes and images were also returned for many of the words. It is believed that the suggestions for further searches connected to these terms have emerged from a combination of user activity and concerted action by far-right groups to skew responses.

Nokia-branded phone returning to Verizon

According to the recent buzz, HMD Global is bringing its mid-range Nokia devices back to the US through a partnership with Verizon. The Nokia brand has seen a sizeable amount of success across Europe under its new owner, and possibly enough to tempt them to dip their toes back into the US. It recently got leaked that the new HMD-built device, Nokia 2.1V has made it out to be a carbon copy of last year’s Nokia 2.1, but with support from Verizon Wireless. If that’s the case, it will more likely have a 5.5-inch display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 425 and an 8MP camera on the back. Although, the leaked device doesn’t prove that a swath of Nokia phones will be headed back to the US, but it does make it clear that Verizon might be testing out consumer interest in the phones.
