‘Dunya’ points out the bitter realities of social media

SONG REVIEW

The recently released song, Dunya, by Jasim Haider & The Pindi Boys highlights an issue everyone can relate to: the bitter realities of social media.

The animated video begins with a boy who is lost in a dunya (world) of his own. Obsessed with social media, he is a bulky youngster with a strong selfie game. Confined to a small room, he takes flattering pictures of himself, uploads them on social media and waits for his followers – mostly women – to start ‘liking’ them.

But, even though he wants assurance from these random girls on the internet, his sucha pyaar (true love) is someone else who has no clue about his one-sided love. He adds her on social media and assumes their love story has begun from there. After the girl realises he is a creep, she blocks him which does not go down well with this not-so-macho boy.

Jhooti hai dunya teri, jhooti hai dunya meri (Your world is a lie) shows how social media makes us believe everyone’s life is perfect except our own, taking away the bitter realities of the online space.
