Scams is a Japanese series that is an adaptation of a non-fiction work Rojin Kui by Daisuke Suzuki. The series contains nine, 30-minutes episodes. Currently, the first season has been released on Netflix as its original series. Hit hard by the Lehman shock, a well-meaning young man joins a phone scam operation and gets increasingly embroiled in the underworld. Freshly graduated from a prestigious university, Seijitsu Kusano landed a job at a large company. His life was like a bed of roses, and everything was on point. But with a twist in the tale, things go spiraling down and he gets laid off from the job due to bankruptcy. Making things worse, his ailing father's medicines and treatment are expensive and his insurance doesn't even cover it. Seijitsu Kusano is pressurised by the bank to pay off his student loans. Seijitsu Kusano is desperate to seek a way out. He then sees a notice for a job that guarantees a lavish life and heavy pay. Turns out that he has to withdraw money from elderly people's bank accounts and these people end up becoming the victims of voice phishing. There are things about Scams that work well enough, but ultimately, it is easier to endorse its perspective than its artistry. While it takes on important and relevant themes, it’s hard to shake the nagging feeling that you’ve seen all this done better elsewhere. But if you’re interested in watching similar-plotted stuff, it’s worth a watch.

If you like all that underworld drama, you’re good to go!
