Thinking Films: PARASITES

A  series of movie screenings titled Thinking Films, to delve into the vast and differing world of narration on the big screen were organised to explore the craftsmanship involved in the moviemaking process. The said screening was held at T2F, a community space devoted for open-discussion and provide the locals with a platform to enable social change by scheduling culturaly rich activities, public discourse, and advocacy using progressive ideas. Movie selected for the transmission was Parasite, a 2019 South Korean comedy-thriller film directed and co-written by Bong Joon-ho. The film stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam, following the story of a poor household who conspired to become the employees of a wealthier family by portraying as unrelated to each other and qualified individuals.

The event was followed by a small discussion to analyse the craft put into process for the film to be presented in a certain way and the idea on which the movie revolves after the screening. It was presented by Sabeeh Ahmad, a film-maker, writer and a geek to scrutinise the film over all. This gut-twisting and bizarre black comedy film is based upon the idea of social status and materialism that are in favour of having people assigned for their work. It also zeroed in on the wealthy Korean family in a modern-day Downton Abbey upstairs-downstairs situation, one far more unstable than the patrician caste realises. The poor family lived in a small semi-basement apartment, working low-paying jobs and struggling to make ends meet. Preparing to study abroad, the family was gifted a scholar's rock which is said to bring wealth. Dreaming to be rich, the family comes up with different tricks without understanding the horrors they could get into. As they proceed, they find themselves facing a series of unfortunate events which land them into a murder case which ends up destroying their family. With the exquisite craft of storytelling reflected in the film, it became clear why the organisers chose this as the subject of the screening.
