Netflix keeps the holiday content rolling with Home for Christmas, a Norwegian comedy about a single woman who needs to find a date to bring home to her family. If that tired premise puts you off, hold up! This endearing TV series actually has a whole lot more to offer. Johanne’s got a problem, she’s the last single person left in her large family, and seemingly the world. Her baby brother has twins, her ex is married and a new father, she can’t go shopping without seeing handholding mittens and pajama sets for two, and she gets stuck working the Christmas Eve shift at the hospital because all the other nurses have a partner or kids. Johanne finally reaches her breaking point after an extremely passive-aggressive family dinner and blurts out a big lie: she says she has a boyfriend. Now she has 24 days to find a guy to bring to her family’s Christmas celebration, or she risks disappointing her loved ones and humiliating herself. Now the same plot has been used in many other movies. But Home for Christmas makes this tired setup come alive by just being a damn good show with stellar cinematography, totally natural and engaging performances, and literal jokes. Lead actor Ida Elise Broch is a joy to watch, she played a well-rounded and grounded character, one that you immediately root for.

A legitimately funny, well-crafted show, stream!
