Erum Azam - Calling the shots

Optimism and confidence takes you places, and that’s how Erum Azam got her game going. The actress caught the limelight with her fitting portrayal as an antagonist in most of her dramas. She marked her big screen debut in a supporting role with Maalik which was a political-thriller movie. The 25-year-old starlet has worked in a number of drama serials including Rasm-e-Duniya, Phir Wohi Dil, Piya Mann Bhaye, Gila Kis Se Karein and many more. Azam has also worked in the lead role in the telefilm Ready Steady Bhaag. The starry-eyed actress sits down with MAG to reveal her dreams, how she plans to achieve them in the future and much more.
Excerpts follow:

How would you define yourself as a person?

I’m a very helpful person. I would also call myself selfless; I always tend to think of others before thinking of myself. Their happiness is my priority.

What attracted you to a career as an actor?

Starting a career in acting was never planned. I didn’t plan on becoming an actor hence; nothing really attracted me to pursue a career in acting. It just happened. One thing led to another and I do not plan to stop!

Any projects that you're currently working on or are in the pipeline?

Yes, I do have a few things in the pipeline. But let’s see how it goes.

Which area of the entertainment world would you like to explore more, acting or modeling?

I like acting more than modeling.

What would you pick as an alternative career for yourself, if given the choice?

If I wasn’t an actor, I would’ve definitely opted for fashion designing.

Of all the roles you have played in the past, which is your favourite?

There was this drama that I did back in 2018, Phir Wohi Dil. I really liked the drama and also the character of Tehreem that I played in the serial.

Three words that best describe you?

Helpful, positive, and honest.

Who is your favourite actor, and why?

It would be Fawad Khan. I have said that a lot of times in all my interviews that he is my favourite actor and I really look up to him.

Where do you see yourself 10 years down the line?

I see myself happy. I just see myself happily continuing with my acting career. That’s what I have planned for myself but let’s hope for the best.

What sort of acting roles will you be seeking in the future?

I would want to play the role of a strong and happy woman. I would like to portray that women can stand up stronger after many falls and that if they undergo a tragedy they won’t play the victim and ask for sympathy. For instance, there’s a role of a woman who is unable to conceive. I wouldn’t want to show her as a weak woman. Instead, I’d like to portray her as strong and positive, as someone who understands that it’s okay if she can’t have a child of her own. Who understands that maybe her true purpose in life is to take care of a child who doesn’t have a mother.
