Truth about green tea: does it help lose weight?

Despite the popular belief, green tea cannot help you lose weight. The key to fat loss is simple. Eating fewer calories than you burn or burning more calories than you eat. No specific foods can speed up fat loss or help you lose weight unless you are consuming foods while staying in a caloric deficit.

Green tea tends to have very few calories and can help keep you full for longer resulting in fewer calories consumed and eventually aid fat loss which is probably why some people have linked the consumption directly to fat loss.

That being said, green tea does have tons of health benefits including being loaded with antioxidants and nutrients that can improve cognitive function.

Tea is rich in polyphenols that have effects like reducing inflammation and helping to fight cancer. They may reduce the risk of both Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, the two most common neurodegenerative disorders.

Green tea can kill bacteria, which improves dental health and lowers your risk of infection. Some controlled trials show that it can cause mild reductions in blood sugar levels. It may also lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
