Netflix ordered 20 episodes of the latest sitcom Team Kaylie, five of which are currently tempting for a quick binge. The series stars Bryana Salaz, competitor on The Voice and recurring cast member of another Netflix series, Malibu Rescue, therefore raising the question that’s on everyone’s mind: Will Team Kaylie blow our minds and wind up being part of the ever-expanding goliathan Malibu Rescue Television Universe (MRTU) franchise? The opening shot of Team Kaylie is a swooping drone shot of a California mountain range. Six teenagers are ibex goat-ing their way across a steep mountain cliff that totally isn’t made out of painted styrofoam. One of them slips, clinging to a branch for dear life. Following a violently loose interpretation of what “community service” means, Kaylie ends up not picking up roadside trash or helping the homeless, but rather, mentoring a middle-school wilderness club, as ordered by the cat-lady principal. If the club, the Pico Porcupines, didn’t consist of at least three-fifths misfits, we wouldn’t be wondering why Team Kaylie isn’t on the Disney Channel. Goths everywhere are no doubt flaming the living crap out of the Team Kaylie Reddit boards as we speak. In her pancake makeup, maleficent-purple lipstick and omnipresent black stocking cap, Valeria casts spells and talks about riding a broom and kind of makes us never want to listen to the cure ever again. The show doesn’t really seem to interest the audiences.
