Are sliding phones coming back?

Tech news

The report comes from CNET, which published photos of the phone. It initially looks like a regular-sized smartphone but has a second screen that slides out to make it tablet-sized. According to CNET's source, TCL would have shown off the phone to reporters covering Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, except the event was canceled due to fears over the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. The big unknown is whether the two halves of the big screen would be flush or if there would be a ridge given the mechanics of the sliding screen. That said, the advantage of such a system, as CNET's Jessica Dolcourt notes, is that this system means no worries about creases in a bendable screen or deteriorating hinges.

Spotify just launched “walled garden” app

Spotify Kids is a "walled garden", "designed with safety in mind": an ad-free, and apparently algorithm-free environment separate to the main Spotify app. Every piece of content in the app — whether it's chart pop, stories, or lullabies — is individually checked to ensure it's actually age-appropriate, and everything's sorted into human-curated playlists. The app itself is free, but signup is available only to users who pay for a Premium Family subscription, so it's not ad-supported. And the company says kids' data is fully encrypted — the only personal details entered at signup are their first name (or a nickname) and, if they want, their birthday so they get special messages and a playlist on the day.

Apple in trouble again over battery issues

France's competition and fraud watchdog, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) announced that it was fining Apple €25 million ($27 million US) for intentionally slowing down older iPhones. Back in 2017, Apple confirmed that it purposely obstructed the full processing power of chips in older iPhone with power management features that came with iOS updates. While the company claimed it only did so to prevent unexpected shutdown for iPhones with serious battery degradation, a dozen lawsuits related to the incident have accused Apple of anything from deceptive practices to sustainability violations.
