Khalil ur Rehman Qamar, Pakistan’s biggest feminist

#peoplearetalkingabout

Long before the International Women’s Day even arrived, controversy simmered on all platforms and it was a sad state of affairs to see that no etiquettes or morality is practiced when views are presented. On a recorded TV show, writer and director Khalil ur Rehman Qamar who wants to be associated with the word ‘feminist,’ albeit without practice, was invited on a TV show alongside Marvi Sirmed, a journalist and a women’s rights activist. It lacks all logic on why a vocal misogynist who last year gave the country a new slogan, “do takkay ki aurat,” was invited to speak on women’s issues to share a panel with a known activist and a religious cleric. The stance surrounding the controversy has been that Aurat March is un-islamic and the courts were approached with the concern. A drama writer, neither represented the law nor religious institutions, was an unfit guest to say the least. What unfolded was a string of profanities, leaving bare his perception on women, and Pakistan witnessed a new low on national television. Qamar, when invited to explain his actions the following day, remained unapologetic, whilst media outlets condemned and extended apologies on his behalf. As for Sirmed, thank you for taking one for the team. – Eman Saleem
