Zara Noor Abbas faces backlash, says fairness facewash doesn’t kill anyone

As the Black Lives Matter movement has taken over the world by storm, conversations also sparked in Pakistan where people stated that discrimination on the basis of colour is not new and the problem has deeply rooted in every society. Many local actors jumped the bandwagon and voiced the cause and since then, the ones that have endorsed whitening products are being called out for their hypocrisy. Where they are advocating the cause and on the other hand, endorse products which promote the obsession of ‘gora rang’. Zara faced criticism after she posted a video of a young African-American girl who detailed the struggles they have to face because of their colour. A comment popped soon after, where she was criticised for endorsing fairness creams and recently becoming the face of skin whitening brand. Zara defended herself by saying, “That does not promote killing, does not promote racism. Stop making this out of context when it is not the agenda. Your word doesn’t matter here. What matters is human life and equality and this is what I am here for. A face wash is killing no one.”
