ASK A CAREER COUNSELOR

I haven’t received a response from an employer I recently gave an interview to; what's the best way to contact them for a follow up without seeming like a pest?

The best way to get an update is by sending them a follow up email or just a polite message so that they know you’re still interested and would like to get an update on your application.

Before accepting a job offer, what are the potential questions an employee should ask about the company?

As a college student, I kept changing my major several times. I eventually became tired of the indecisiveness and just graduated with whatever degree I was closest to. Now after spending quite a lot on my education, I am still no closer to a career as I was before. I have dreams of having a great career making good money but I have no idea in what industry. What do you suggest for people who seem to have no real calling to a particular career?

If you cannot choose a specific career for yourself then do internships and voluntary work at organisations. This will allow you to see where your interest lies and once you know that you can always apply for jobs in that specific field.

I quit working more than seven years ago in the marketing sector to stay at home with my kids. How do I get back into the job market having been out so long?

You should start researching about the new tools being used in the marketing field and brush your skills up and then start applying for jobs. Even if you don’t get a job initially, start interning at different places.

I work for an advertising company from 2pm to 6pm. And since I’m free in the morning till 1 in the afternoon, I applied at another advertising company for a part-time job. Is it okay to work for two competitive companies at the same time?

It is a conflict of interest to work at two advertising agencies. This can have repercussions and can sabotage your career in the long term. •
